Your first social dance or class

Welcome! Social dancing is meant to be welcoming. If you have never been before, a little context can help you walk in with confidence.
What to expect
A social dance is an open evening of dancing — often with a short lesson first, then open dancing for several hours. A class is a focused lesson series; a workshop is usually a longer, more intensive session.
You do not need to know anyone in the room. Many dancers are happy to dance with newcomers, especially at beginner-friendly events.
Do I need a partner?
Usually no. Many styles use partner rotation during lessons and socials. Events marked no partner needed are especially newcomer-friendly.

What to wear
Wear clothes you can move in comfortably. Shoes should stay securely on your feet — many dancers avoid heavy rubber soles. When in doubt, check the event listing for any notes.
Etiquette basics
- It is okay to say yes or no to a dance — both are normal.
- If you are new, mention it; many partners will adjust.
- Stay aware of the floor and other dancers.
- Thank your partner after a dance.
